Balloon Race Car 2D Design parts and instructions for students Year 6 - 7 transition

This resource was created for year 6 summer school students. The file includes a 2D design file to cut the parts needed to make a balloon racer. I found that corrugated card worked better as it is light weight, although drying times are longer. I gave students the choice of using either card or plywood, or a combination of both. Great, fun activity for students. Principles of a design brief and specifications have also been included, along with some extension tasks to be completed while the glue dries.

Design Technology - Electronics - Complete the System Diagrams Activity

These worksheets give students a number of hypothetical situations and they are asked to select suitable input, process and output components in order to produce the system. This activity not only teaches students about designing electronic systems using a system approach, but it also helps students to research different electronic components that they could use. This activity works well with my electronics information cards, also available from my shop.

Design Technology - Electronic Systems - Input Process or Output starter - Systems Diagrams

(1)
Lesson starter including a simple introduction to systems diagrams. 26 slides with component images and names. Students to use traffic light cards to indicate if they think the component is an Input, a Process or and Output component. This lesson works well as a stand alone starter, or alternatively use this along with my component cards lesson where students use the information provided to select appropriate components to complete various systems diagrams.

Following on from my lesson on Fossil Fuels, this lesson explores renewable energy sources. Tarsia puzzle on fossil fuels used as a lesson starter and to recap previous lesson. Information cards provided for students about a range of renewable energy sources. Students to use post it notes to write down the advantages and disadvantages of each of the types of fuels (in groups, timed activity - suggested that each group has a different colour post-it note to ensure full participation) Animated suggested answers to be revealed after the activity then a class discussion about the answers Full instructions included on the slides. Slides animated for extra interest
Microcontroller Maze Project

Microcontroller Maze Project

(1)
My students love this marble maze project as an interesting introduction into microcontrollers. Based around the Genie CO8 Microcontroller the circuit uses LDRs to identify when a marble drops down the holes in the maze. Here I have uploaded the Scheme of works, a student E-Portfolio and homework booklet, and a weekly teachers How 2 to be placed on screen. The E-Portfolio also includes full instructions for the student about what is required and where. Circuits wizard and 2D design files are available upon request at Nicoladuty@gmail.com, however the files are the wrong format to be added directly onto the site. I hope your students enjoy this project as much as mine do. Please feel free to E-Mail me to request PCB and CAD files, simply specify the files you want and the name of the project.

This resource provides students with a range of circuits for them to develop using Circuit Wizard, then investigate the circuit properties and answer questions about the function of the circuits. The resource helps to build a greater understanding of the function of the individualcomponents and the circuits as a whole.

Literacy and Numeracy activities for electronics students

I use these activities as extension tasks for students who finish ahead of schedule, but they also help to bring elements of literacy and numeracy into electronics. There are 11 tasks in total including cross words, adding resistor values, ohms law calculations and sorting words into nouns, verbs and adjectives. I hope you find something useful in this little pack of activities. The numeracy based questions include examples for students to follow.

This starter activity is a fun way of quizzing students on their electronics knowledge The quiz is on a PowerPoint presentation uses hyperlinks to take you to the next question if you get the answer correct and incorrect answers to a game over page. There is even a 50/50 option to take away 2 incorrect answers. This is editable so you can change the questions to suit your own means, but if you do so it is important to make sure you either edit the hyperlinks or always keep the correct answers in the same position.

Designed to be used with traffic light cards this resource tests students knowledge of electrical conductors and insulators. The image appears on screen with the first click. Students hold up green for a conductor or red for an insulator. The next click reveals the answer. There are some odd one out slides at the end of the presentation that can be used as a discussion point as to why the material is the odd one out. The is a great, simple way of getting some of the basic principles across to KS3 and KS4 Design Technology students.

How 2 create E-Textiles PCB flashing LEDs 555/ 555 to 4017 range of circuits plus examples

(0)
This How 2 guide forms part of a complete project. Aimed at fulfilling aspects of the Eduqas Design Technology course, the project introduces the concept of E-Textiles. Students research E-Textiles and use analysis and evaluation skills. This guide is based upon Circuit Wizard by New Wave Concepts, however the guide would be helpful for a number of different circuit design programs. The PCB uses larger pads that are designed for stitching conductive thread instead of attaching normal off board components on flying leads. The first circuit uses a 555 astable circuit and a 4017 decade counter with 7 LED outputs used to produce a flashing array of lights. The second circuit is a simplified version with only 3 flashing outputs. Up to 6 LED's can be used with this circuit as more LED's can be added in parallel. There is a video showing the simulation of the working PCB. Students are always encouraged to test their PCB's before etching to avoid any wasted materials when mistakes have been made. Also included is a guide to creating a 555 astable PCB with one flashing LED (although a second can be added in parallel. Zipped file includes examples of PCBs that can be opened and used with circuit wizard so textiles students can use these PCBs without having to create them on circuit wizard first.

Based upon the Eduqas Design Technology course, the attached file is intended to be used along side my E-Textiles project, but it could be adapted as required and used as a guide and support for other projects using a sketchbook. The Example sketch book includes Task analysis, Research and Design Ideas example pages, all based around the sketch book idea. Use this on it's own, or alongside the Sketchbook guide and the Presentation Folder guide and Presentation Folder example. There is also a guide to creating a PCB using Circuit Wizard available as part of the bundle, plus a student Homework book to help the students to consolidate their learning.
